Free radicals are very aggressive molecules that are formed by chemical reactions during human metabolism. During sport and intense muscular efforts the body’s metabolic demands increase leading to a more rapid accumulation of free radicals. Free radical production rate is proportional to the amount of oxidative stress and cellular damage placed upon the body. This can be detrimental to health, and cause serious damage to tissues and organs. Free radical damage is also responsible for post-exercise muscle soreness and impairs, and it delays recovery if left unchecked. We are also exposed to external sources of free radicals from environmental, chemical, and UV radiation exposure. Exposure to UVA and UVB rays is the main cause of skin aging (photo-aging), due to oxidative stress and damage induced by free radicals.
